Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center Provides P.E.T. Services

Significant funding reductions for mental health beds over the last several years has forced hospitals nationwide to keep psychiatric patients in their Emergency Departments and inpatient units.

Through necessity and budget cuts, hospitals frequently must keep psychiatric patients for long stays, which is not ideal. These patients require the right type of facility (and the appropriate type of bed) to protect the patient, staff, and other patients in the facility.

Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center (CPRMC) needed a solution to provide psychiatric patients with specialized care while also improving their level of care. To meet this need, CPRMC partnered with the Psychiatric Evaluation Team (PET) from Palmetto Health Richland.

The PET team coordinator works with two RCCH HealthCare Partners sister facilities, CPRMC and KershawHealth, to perform face-to-face evaluations with psychiatric patients and expediently place patients in existing psychiatric care facilities in South Carolina. By working with this coordinate, CPRMC nursing resources and staff have more availability, improved patient flow, and most importantly, psychiatric patients quickly receive specialized care when they are admitted to the hospital.

Before the rollout of the partnership, the CPRMC leadership team and medical staff did not anticipate the significant impact the partnership would make throughout the hospital. The PET team is now a trusted, established program for physicians and staff.

The PET team is a contracted service requiring a significant financial commitment from RCCH HealthCare Partners, providing a commitment from both corporate and CPRMC to do the right thing for both patients and the facility.
