Saline Staff Provides Exceptional Service in Mass Casualty Event
41 Student-Athletes Transported to Saline After Bus Accident
The Saline Medtran Ambulance service responded to a three-bus motor vehicle accident on a Friday in November. The buses were carrying members of the Helena-West Helena High school football team, cheerleaders, and band members. They were on their way to Arkadelphia for the high school football playoffs when the buses were involved in an accident that shut down the interstate.
Saline Medtran Ambulance and Benton Fire Department collectively triaged over 100 students and coaching staff. Over 41 student-athletes were transported to Saline Memorial Hospital for additional medical treatment.
Saline Memorial Hospital activated the External Disaster Notification related to the event. Every department was able to come together and assist the Emergency Room staff in treating and discharging the patients.
With a Mass Casualty Event such as this, it was the best outcome in a bad situation. No major injuries occurred. Saline coworkers-from registration, to HR to nursing and physicians all came back to work with a moment’s notice to help triage and to expedite these patients as well as the existing ED patients.
The staff always drills for situations like this. It was reassuring to know that their team showed up and worked together to care for these students. Unfortunately, the students missed out on their last conference game of the year. However, the Saline staff is thankful that their injuries were mostly minor and that they will have the chance to play again!
The Helena-West Helena Mayor sent a letter to express his heartfelt appreciation and support offered to the students and staff, and also shared his sincere thanks for the top-notch service provided at Saline.
