Shoals Tech Helps Hurricane Harvey Victims

Hurricane Volunteer Sets Example of Selfless Service

Matt Metcalf didn’t hesitate to respond to the call for help for victims of Hurricane Harvey.

As a tech at Shoals Hospital as well as a nursing student, he believed his skills would be needed, especially in the immediate aftermath of the storms and record rainfall that devastated Houston and large parts of the surrounding areas. He gathered up needed supplies and set out to help.

Angel Kline, who works with Matt in her role as the Inpatient Services Director, was impressed with his need to help others, especially when he could be putting himself at risk.

“Matt is a young nurse-in-training, a Millennial,” Angel said. “And I often hear complaints about this generation. But in the face of this devastation, Matt was eager to help, eager to give of his time voluntarily. We’re often pushing our work ethic on Millennials, but I think Matt’s example of selfless service shows that we could learn something from them.”
