We’ve all heard of Mother Teresa and read quotes attributed to her. Her example and encouragement to love and respect each person became the hallmark of her life. While we may think of her life as extraordinary – that what she did and was able to accomplish was extraordinary – she would remind us of the importance of doing small things with great love.
When asked how she could do all that she did, she would reply: “one, one, one… just help one person at a time.”
Many books and articles have been written about Mother Teresa which would not have been something that she would have ever hoped for or wanted. However, they all serve as a wonderful reminder for us of how much can be accomplished with love. Simply loving and respecting and caring for each person — that’s her message. Isn’t that what our goal is here at St. Joe’s?
John Gilliam was inspired and commissioned to create a bronze statue of Mother Teresa. John joined us for a blessing and dedication of the statue in our north lobby on November 9.
An interesting bit of history: John’s mother-in-law was his model when he was trying to make sure that Mother Teresa’s garment flowed the way it should on the statue. She, Lucille Skinner, celebrated her 102nd birthday recently.
May the life of Mother Teresa continue to inspire us as we care for all people without distinction, and with great love and respect.
